1. Overview

Put Ideas To Work, also known as The Put Ideas To Work Newsletter (the “Publication”) is published by The Venture Operator and values the privacy of its readers and subscribers.

This Privacy Policy explains how personal information is handled in connection with the Publication, primarily through Substack, and how privacy is managed when content is shared on third-party platforms such as LinkedIn.

This policy is intended to be clear, proportionate, and reflective of how the Publication actually operates, consistent with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). Where readers and subscribers are located in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, additional rights apply under the GDPR and UK GDPR, as set out in Section 10.

The Venture Operator operates a separate website at theventureoperator.com, with its own Privacy Policy governing information collected through that site and its associated services. If you interact with both, each policy applies to its respective context.

2. Information collected

Substack subscribers

When you subscribe to the Publication via Substack, the information collected may include:

  • Your email address

  • Subscription status (free or paid, if applicable)

  • Basic engagement information (such as email opens or clicks), as made available by Substack

This information is collected and processed by Substack, which acts as the primary platform and service provider for the Publication.

Readers on third-party platforms (e.g. LinkedIn)

Content from the Publication may also be shared on third-party platforms such as LinkedIn.

When you interact with content on those platforms:

  • Any personal data collected is governed by the platform’s own privacy policy

  • The Publication does not receive personal data about individual readers beyond what is publicly visible or aggregated

Please refer to the relevant platform’s privacy policy for details on how your data is handled in those environments.

3. How information is used

Subscriber information is used solely to:

  • Deliver the Publication via email

  • Manage subscriptions

  • Understand high-level engagement trends to improve content quality

The Publication does not:

  • Sell subscriber data

  • Rent or trade email addresses

  • Use subscriber information for third-party marketing

4. Data processing and platform roles

Substack

Substack:

  • Hosts the Publication

  • Manages subscriptions and email delivery

  • Processes subscriber data in accordance with its own Privacy Policy

The Publication relies on Substack’s infrastructure and does not independently control or export subscriber data beyond what the platform provides.

Third-party platforms

When content is shared on platforms such as LinkedIn:

  • Data collection, tracking, and analytics are controlled by the platform

  • Interactions are subject to the platform’s terms, policies, and algorithms

The Publication is not responsible for third-party platform data practices.

Where content is shared on third-party platforms, those platforms act as independent data controllers for any information collected. Their handling of your information is governed by their own privacy policies, which we recommend you review directly.

Processes subscriber data in accordance with its own Privacy Policy.

5. Cookies and Analytics

The Publication does not deploy custom tracking cookies or behavioural analytics of its own.

Limited analytics and performance measurement are used through:

  • Substack’s platform analytics, which provide aggregated engagement information such as opens and clicks

  • Google Search Console, which provides aggregated and anonymised data such as search queries, impressions, and page performance, and does not provide access to personally identifiable information about individual users

Google Search Console provides aggregated and anonymised data, such as search queries, impressions, and page performance. It does not provide the Publication with access to personally identifiable information about individual users.

Any cookies, analytics, or tracking technologies associated with these or other services where content is shared are governed by the respective privacy policies of:

  • Substack

  • Google

  • Third-party platforms where Publication content is shared (such as LinkedIn, X, Threads, Instagram, and TikTok)

The Publication itself does not deploy cookies or tracking technologies outside those used by Substack or third-party platforms.

Any cookies, analytics, or tracking technologies used are governed by:

  • Substack’s Privacy Policy

  • The privacy policies of third-party platforms where content is shared

6. Data sharing

Subscriber information is not shared with third parties except:

  • Where required for the operation of the Publication via Substack

  • Where required by law

No personal data is shared for advertising or marketing purposes outside the Substack platform.

7. Data retention

Subscriber information is retained for as long as you remain subscribed or as required to operate the Publication.

You may unsubscribe at any time using the unsubscribe link provided in emails. Once unsubscribed, data handling is governed by Substack’s retention and deletion practices.

8. Data security

Subscriber information is accessed only as required to operate the Publication and is handled using the security measures provided by Substack and relevant third-party platforms. The Publication does not routinely maintain independent databases of subscriber information outside those platforms. Where any export or independent processing occurs (for example, for migration, analysis, or operational purposes), reasonable steps are taken to protect that information consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles.

9. International readers

The Publication is operated from Australia. Personal information collected in connection with the Publication is primarily processed by Substack, which operates from the United States. Information may also be processed in other jurisdictions depending on the third-party platforms involved.

By subscribing or engaging with the Publication, you acknowledge that your information may be processed and stored outside Australia and outside your country of residence.
